I suggest a forum for agriculture and GMO's. I will post under this forum advocacy of diversified farming, sustainable agriculture and labeling of and restrictions on introduction of GMO's.

I would like to see a new topic created for items like this that people think should be in the Declaration but isn't.

Food, Agriculture and GMO's Empty Patents, Seeds (GMO's), and Pharmaceuticals

Post by Joe Wed Oct 19, 2011 12:59 pm

Review and modify US patent policies as necessary to ensure they are serving the public interest.

Patents grant a limited term monopoly to the patentees. This monopoly affords the recipient an opportunity to earn large profits through marketing and sales. This provides the patentee an incentive to mislead the public through false or deceptive studies attesting to the benefits of and minimizing the risks involved with the product. Patents on pharmaceuticals result in a distortion of value wherein the patented product is deemed to be of greater value than competing products such as natural herbs or products which cannot be patented. This distortion of value has many harmful effects including deceptive practices, harmful products, and the abandonment or discrediting of natural products that do not and cannot have monopoly patent rights attached to them.

This is also true for patented GMO seeds. GMO seeds can cause loss of control of farmers over their own seeds and the loss of plant diversity as well as related farming knowledge. GMO's also may have unknown downstream effects on plants, insects, other animals and human health. Thorough studies are needed to demonstrate the benefits outway the potential harm of introducing new life forms (GMO's) before allowing their introduction. The patenting process for GMO's need to be reexamined to determine if it is operating in the best interest of the American public.
