ALEC - The Heart of Corruption in the USA Empty ALEC - The Heart of Corruption in the USA

I'm just going to leave this here, it more than speaks for itself. This is an organization that needs to be on the cover of every major newspaper and the heart of every Occupy protest in the US.

The link has a nice, quick summary about ALEC. In short: the wealthiest get together, write policy, invite politicians for lavish vacations and then take those policies home to make them law.

How do legislators benefit?
Why would a legislator be interested in advancing cookie-cutter bills that are corporate give-aways for global firms located outside of their district? ALEC’s appeal rests largely on the fact that legislators receive an all-expenses-paid trip that provides many part-time legislators with vacations that they could not afford on their own, along with the opportunity to rub shoulders with wealthy captains of industry (major prospective out-of-state donors to their political campaigns). For a few hours of work on a task force and a couple of indoctrination sessions by ALEC experts, part-time legislators can bring the whole family to ALEC’s annual convention, work for a few hours, then stay in swank hotels, attend cool parties -- even strip clubs-- and raise funds for the campaign coffer, all heavily subsidized by the corporate till. In 2009, ALEC spent $251,873 on childcare so mom and dad could have fun.

You want a nice, clear, concise example of how corruption is destroying America? It doesn't get any more blatantly obvious than this.

Question is what do we do about ALEC and how do we make sure something like this never exists again?

I, and I'm sure most folks have never heard of ALEC....

So how do we organize an OCCUPY ALEC effort? .... or is it just some 'ghost' like organization that meets in the shadows of night (or probably Wall Street in this case Very Happy )

I'm excited about the 99% effort, but as we read and watch on TV our compliants are so broad, numerous and convoluted. The 99% is getting the attentin of the media and, I'm sure, the 1%, but we're just all talk and no action.

I've scanned the posts about needing to just have one demand. I don't agree with this. I think we need to pick an important issue, maybe ALEC, and do something that demostrates the 99%'s Power Though Unity.

Until we actually do something that makes part of the 1% (and their puppet politicians) change their actions we will never be taken seriously. .... Oh, we can wait until the elections and vote for the politicians we think best support the middle class and the 99%, but that doesn't seem to be working...does it?

I just registered on this site so I'm clueless on how to get anything done....
-- anybody agree? Shall we pick initially ONE issue/organization (ALEC?) and do something to expose them to the world?

Thanks of reading.
Don

If I personally had to funnel everything into 1 topic I think would have the best chance of fixing everything it would be, far and away, proportional representation.

http://www.accuratedemocracy.com/d_intro.htm

Through that system you could easily work through all the problems step by step. Long story short it would completely decimate the Republican and Democratic parties if they continued to ignore the people. It forces parties and politicians to listen because if they don't other parties will step in and take their place. So instead of a house with:

250 Dem
250 Rep

you would have (I'm using rounded numbers for simplicity)

125 D
125 R
125 Labor
50 Green
20 Socialist
20 TEA
20 Rent Is Too Damn High
15 Libertarian

Obviously not those exact numbers, but there would be no more worthless votes because everyone could just pick the party that reflects their views. Party strength would determine who gets in. No more gerrymandering, money would have a very hard time corrupting things because people will just vote for another party next time around. Greater emphasis on policy instead of politicians.

So if I had to personally distill it down to a single, solitary thing that would unf*** this country in a hurry, that would be it.

And a bit of double dissolution on the side:

"If the House of Representatives passes any proposed law, and the Senate rejects or fails to pass it, or passes it with amendments to which the House of Representatives will not agree, and if after an interval of three months the House of Representatives, in the same or the next session, again passes the proposed law with or without any amendments which have been made, suggested, or agreed to by the Senate, and the Senate rejects or fails to pass it, or passes it with amendments to which the House of Representatives will not agree, the Governor-General may dissolve the Senate and the House of Representatives simultaneously."

You jerks want to deadlock legislation? FINE, YOU'RE ALL FIRED, NEW ELECTIONS!

Elections last no longer than 3 months, and mandatory voting, even for people in prison.

Edit:
That site in the OP will tell you everything you need to know about ALEC. Basically corporations and the super wealthy give a ton of money to this group that just writes "mock legislation". Basically practice runs to make laws so cloudy and convoluted they can figure out ways to pass horrible things without anyone really knowing what they're talking about. Then politicians take those cloudy, convoluted things back to their home states and turn them into laws. You'd probably have to expose the whole thing and make sure it stayed in the news for a long time. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
